Good evening. I was just wondering if someone out there can explain to me why I keep getting a Data Usage Warning message on my phone when I don't use it for doing anything online. Most I do is call family and friends, and text my brother on nights when he is working to let him know I'm waiting there to pick him up after his shift is over. How is any of this considered data? I have had my phone and the same plan for nearly 4 years now, and been doing the same things with it ever since and never used to get these warnings until just recently. What's the story here? It if keeps up, I will have little to no choice but to switch to a different phone company and plan where I can get nearly unlimited data for just a little more than what I pay now with my current phone and plan. Any advice/tips would be appreciated.

You can get unlimited data for $60 with ATT. https://www.att.com/plans/unlimited-data-plans.html

@JonnySliceYou've got apps on your phone that might be doing things in the background. If you check your settings you can see exactly which apps are using the data...

Actually, I have no apps on my phone except for what was already pre-installed when I first got it. As I said, most I ever do is call family and friends and text my brother while I'm waiting to pick him up. Also, if I could afford 60 bucks a month, I would switch plans. There are some companies out there that offer unlimited data for as little as 30 bucks a month which is only 5 bucks more than I already pay with no data. I just wanted to know why I kept getting the message as of recently after having the same phone and plan for the last roughly 4 years I've had the phone and doing nothing differently. I also don't really like my phone anyway. Seems the battery needs to be charged every 2 days even though I rarely use it. Might have to start looking elsewhere, I guess.

If you check your settings you can see exactly which apps are using the data. Did you check this?

Looking elsewhere isn't going to change the way your phone works. Change the settings.

Most people charge their smartphones daily, it's the norm these days, especially if you use it...

Software updates change the way things work. Check the settings and see where the data is being used.

What plan do you have and what exactly does the warning say? Depending on your plan (prepaid vs postpaid), the warning could mean anything from you are nearing your data limit to you are being charged extra for data usage. As noted above, a smartphone will use data if allowed even if you are not actively doing it. The only way to ensure a smartphone does not use data is to turn data off.

Now we're getting some where. If you have the $30 with $5 discount Gophone plan, you have no data. Since all smartphones use data, you are getting a data warning. You can turn data off on most cell phones, which you will have to do or you will get charged pay per use for data on that plan. Or you can add 250 mb of data for $5.

You should check your phones data use. If it's using data, you will have to pay for it.

Check your phone settings. It is possible that you can change "Billing cycle and data warning" in DATA USAGE.
