The San Francisco 49ers have announced the following roster moves ahead of their matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

  • Promoted DL Alex Barrett and DL T.Y. McGill from the team's practice squad to the active roster (standard elevations).
  • Downgraded DL Kalia Davis' game status from questionable to out.

Barrett has not appeared in a game with the 49ers since the 2020 season. That season, Barrett played in seven games. In that time, he had five tackles and two quarterback hits. He is unlikely to play on Sunday.

McGill has played in just two games with the 49ers this season, recording a forced fumble, a QB hit, and two tackles. He has a better chance to be active and play in the Super Bowl than Barrett, but it's more likely that neither plays. The 49ers sometimes promoted practice squad players in order to get them up with the team, more as a reward for the player's service on the practice squad, even if the player won't actually suit up.

Davis has dealt with injuries in his first two seasons with the team. In 2023, Davis appeared in three games with the 49ers, and recorded a sack, a QB hit, and one tackle for loss. The 49ers opened Davis' practice window recently, after placing him on Injured Reserve (IR) on January 24. Davis will remain on IR and will not play in the Super Bowl. The team hopes to have Davis healthy for offseason practices this spring.

Additionally, Matt Barrows reported that DT Arik Armstead (knee, foot), LB Oren Burks (shoulder), TE George Kittle (toe), and CB Ambry Thomas (ankle) practiced in full on Friday. None is listed on the injury report for Sunday. So the 49ers are fully healthy going into Super Bowl LVIII.

By Kirk Larrabee

The offseason is underway for the San Francisco 49ers, which means the team's decision makers will soon have to determine which free agents they would like to try to keep and which ones they'll have to let go. One of the more interesting cases is defensive end Chase Young, whom the 49ers added during the regular season from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a third-round draft pick. It may be hard for the 49ers to prevent Young from being more than a rent-a-player, but Young's friend and former Ohio State University teammate Nick Bosa made it clear Tuesday he'd like to see general manager John Lynch and the 49ers brass find a way to keep Young on the team. In this edition of the 49ers Notebook, we delve into a range of topics starting with Bosa's
